9 Trends The Beauty Industry Is Going All In On For 2022

Jan 30, 2022

After a year of looks centered around Y2K nostalgia, we're ready to focus on what's next.

We know: 2022 is starting to feel a lot like 2021 wearing a fake mustache. But that's the beauty of, well, beauty: Trying a new eye shadow or face mask can offer a much needed respite from *gestures at everything*. And after a year of looks centered around Y2K nostalgia, we can't be the only ones ready to focus on at what's next.

So while we wouldn't put away our butterfly clips just yet — the early aughts will remain a steadfast source of inspiration — there are several other trends rising the proverbial beauty ranks for 2022. From TikTok fads to trends predicted by the likes of Google, Yelp and Pinterest, we gathered some of the year's upcoming trends in makeup, hair, skin-care and cosmetic procedures. Read on to find out 2022's (soon-to-be) biggest trends, including additional insight from Clare Varga, Head of Beauty at trend forecasting company WGSN.

Lip Blushing

If you haven't already seen this trend all over TikTok, allow us to explain: A tattoo artist applies a semi-permanent tattoo to the lips to create the appearance of a fuller, shaded pout, which lasts about a year and a half. (Think of it as microblading, only for lips instead of brows.) Wacky as it may sound, searches for the service spiked 130% on Yelp last year alone. And we can see the appeal, especially because it looks like we'll still be wearing face masks for the foreseeable future.…

Fermented ingredients

Ingredients like fermented rose, millet, fig, barley and soy are on the rise in skin care, according to Krupa Koestline, a cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Consultants. Driven by the K- and J-Beauty markets, there are several benefits for both brands and consumers.

"Fermentation releases enzymes that break down molecules so they can better penetrate the skin, delivering powerful ingredients into the very structure of the skin or hair," explains Varga. "The process of fermentation also cultivates the growth of beneficial bacteria such as lactic, organic and acetic acids, which act as natural preservatives. These naturally occurring bacteria prolong the shelf life of formulas, appealing to both the sustainably minded and value-focused consumer."

Dramatic Haircuts

"Just a trim?" Not this year. According to Pinterest, spicy looks like short hair mohawks, dyed shaved heads and bob-cut wigs are all trending — along with the mullet, which continues to thrive. In fact, its latest iteration, the "wolf cut," is taking off thanks to celebs like Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus.

"Tweakments"

After several years of "Instagram face," the natural look is taking off again — well, sort of. More subtle cosmetic treatments are gaining popularity, such as those done with platelet-rich fibrin (aka PRF), which have seen an 44% increase in searches on Yelp in the last year.

"Subtle treatments, such as Morpheus RF microneedling, Aquagol or MicroTox, will be all the rage to 'pre-juvenate' and stay ahead of aging and still look natural," says board-certified dermatologist and "dermfluencer" Dr. Sheila Farhang, founder of Avant Dermatology in Tucson, Arizona.

Meanwhile, Varga adds that increased press around botched procedures and celebs going public about their own treatment reversals have also contributed to the trend. "This has also been accelerated by a pandemic-fueled return to a more natural, less-augmented aesthetic and desire for individuality," she says. Still, needles aren't going anywhere; rather, patients will look for ways to enhance their natural features. "This is the surgery equivalent of no-makeup-makeup — the no tweakment-tweakment," says Varga.

Hair Tinsel

A decade after former "Real Housewife of Beverly Hills" star Adrienne Maloof accented her blonde hair with gold tinsel, the trend is taking off (according to recent Google search data, that is). The look may be celebratory, but there's no need to wait for the holidays to wear a style like Kacey Musgraves's tinsel-tail, or Katy Perry's shimmery straight style.

"Cleanicals"

In the new world of "clean" beauty, transparency is the name of the game. "'Clean' beauty is extending its reach beyond non-toxic ingredients to include other ethical considerations," explains Varga. "Brands that want to declare themselves clean must now be safe and sustainable, or risk losing the trust of consumers." In other words, simply calling formulas or packaging "clean" without additional details about a product's efficacy, sourcing and supply chain won’t suffice. "Consumers are keen to see clean brands commit to a wider brief, creating a version of clean that is safe and more sustainable," says Varga.

Bejeweled Beauty

Embellished looks have been on the rise ever since "Euphoria" first hit HBO in 2019, and the trend is only continuing to gain traction. Pinterest searches for rhinestone pedicures jumped 150%, while crystal eye makeup rose 110%. And for the more daring, tooth gems are also an option; searches for the dentally adorned look are up 85% on the platform year over year.

Waterless Washing

Conserving resources — particularly water — is one environmental concern the beauty industry is slowly chipping away at. "Waterless washing products conserve water, accommodating the one in 10 individuals globally who lack access to safe drinking water," explains Varga. Showerless shampoo (such as Swair) and waterless shaving products (like Hanni's Shave Pillow) are among the early adopters of this trend, but expect to see it evolve into other facets of personal care as well.

Shades of Green

Very Peri may have earned Pantone's coveted title of "color of the year," but according to Google, earthy sage green is the hue to watch (meanwhile, Kelly green was all over the Spring 2022 runways). Nail polish is always a safe bet, or you can try it on your eyes.

These are the biggest beauty trends of 2022 to look out for

Jan 30, 2022

While 2021 has been challenging in many ways, one thing that has been a constant source of joy has been the beauty trends that have emerged. We’ve had 90s nostalgia and Y2K hair, meta-skin and the Boy Band Bob, and not forgetting the endless weird and wonderful makeup hacks and viral skincare moments from TikTok.

Looking forward to 2022, it seems there are many more joyous beauty trends coming up. From next year’s must-have hues, to the return of big and bold perfumes, to the rise and rise of ‘nailspaces’ nail art and statement post-pandemic hair cuts, we take a deep dive into what’s coming…

PURPLE HAZE

If there’s one colour that will define next year, it is undoubtedly purple. Trend forecasters WGSN predicted “Digital Lavender” as their Colour Of The Year, and similarly, Pantone announced Very Peri as theirs – both being variations on a soft blue/purple shade with violet-red undertones and both encouraging a sense of tranquility, hope and expression of imagination. For some, the purple craze has already begun, according to retailer John Lewis, who have seen sales of purple blusher increase by 91%, lipstick by +101% and eyeshadow +60% year on year.

“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the truster and beloved blue colour family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of The Pantone Colour Institute. “Very Peri displays a joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

FRAGRANCE COMEBACK

2020 prompted a perfume pause for many of us while we were navigating a new homebound existence, and then in 2021, we all found comfort and familiarity in our trusted signature scents. 2022, by contrast, will mark the return of bigger and bolder scents, with notes of 20s glamour and intense decadence.

John Lewis has seen sales of perfume rise by 24% compared to the previous year with triple-digit growth of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau De Parfum, a heady floral woody scent with notes of jasmine, saffron and cedar. Other top sellers include Givenchy L'Interdit Rouge, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia and Acqua Di Parma’s Oud & Spice, each as opulent and moreish as the other.

STICK-ON EVERYTHING

We’ve already seen the rise of face stickers as well as stick-on makeup (with eyeliner being the biggest group within the category), but 2022 will bring a whole new level to the stick-on trend. Searches for tooth gems are up by 85% on Pinterest, crystal eye makeup is up 110% and rhinestone pedicures are up by a whopping 150%. In part a continuation of the 90s throwback, the trend for stick-ons bridges the gap between makeup and costume jewellery for a blinging display of hedonistic fun and lavishness.

POST PANDEMIC CHOP

Whether you’re marking the end of a bad breakup or embracing a new job, it’s a very common reaction to acknowledge a new chapter in life with a dramatic haircut. Following the end of the Harry Potter films, Emma Watson promptly had her hair styled into a pixie cut, Rihanna used her hair as the focal point in a total image transformation to release her album Good Girl Gone Bad, and Selena Gomez revealed a shoulder length, choppy bob after her breakup with Justin Bieber. And in 2022, we’re all going to subconsciously yet ceremoniously break up with the pandemic by way of a statement chop.

Pinterest has already noted its users gathering inspiration for their 2022 salon appointment. Searches for shaved head dye designs are up by 12x compared to last year, and searches for mullet hairstyles have increased by 190%. Interestingly, there are also a growing number of people seeking a transformation but wary of commitment, with year on year searches for bob cut wigs increasing by three times, perhaps reflecting the uncertainty of the times.

NAILSCAPES

Nail art is nothing new, but 2022 will bring a new wave of landscape art to nails with technicians painting entire scenes onto nails, bringing a sense of escapism and calm to our fingertips. Searches for desert nails are up 105% on Pinterest, and searches for galaxy nail art that calls upon vast cosmic displays is up by 115%.

Marble nail art, which has been one of the most in-demand designs for the past few years, will finally give way to geode nail art, in line with the more celestial and holistic direction of nail art.

BEAUTY SNACKING

According to WGSN, the pandemic gave rise to the concept of ‘beauty snacking’ – micro beauty moments incorporated into daily lives to break up home-working or create accessible moments of pleasure. From a quick spritz of a refreshing facial mist, to a luxurious hand massage to ward off over-sanitised dryness, beauty snacking will become even more established over the coming year.
